Senior Citizens Living - The Truth About The Options Available To Senior Citizens
The truth about senior citizens living standards can be expressed as a function of their financial income and by how much they were able to save during their working life. The rising number of seniors moving into retirement due to healthier lifestyles is pushing Federal and State budgets to their limits making it unlikely that any additional money will be provided to help seniors in the short term. But, all is not lost. People who have not been able to prepare financially for their retirement and who have little or no ongoing income still have a number of options available to them when they retire.
The quality of life you can have as a senior is determined to a large degree by your living arrangements, and by how much money you have put aside. If you have been astute enough to invest in real estate, and lucky enough to avoid the divorces or other legal disasters which can waste your investments completely away, you will have a great advantage. You can either remain in your home with no rent or mortgage to pay, or you can sell it and move into a smaller place which will be easier to manage, pocketing the difference in price as a lump sum. This can make your retirement a comfortable experience.
The numbers of retirees who are in that position is sadly very small, and thousands reach retirement with no financial solidity whatsoever. This will obviously put you in an extremely difficult situation as there will be so many senior citizens competing for the same basic living apartments. The best resource available to you is HUD where you can find out about the types of property which are being put aside for seniors. A meeting with a HUD approved housing counselor will tell you exactly what your options are, and from there you can find organizations which are set up specifically to help seniors find the right home.
One of the hardest things to do when you reach retirement age is to stop focussing on the nonessential things in your life. You now have many opportunities to do the really enjoyable things the extra time you now have gives to you so, it makes sense to not worry too much about your age or how much you weigh or how you are going to find the money you need for your living.
The one statement which virtually all senior citizens living at home would make is that they want to retain their independence and stay there for as long as possible. If they can, they would like to remain outside of the care home system for the rest of their lives. There are several steps which can be taken to make this more likely, the first of which is obviously to choose a home which is easy to manage in with whichever difficulties you have. If you have leg problems and mobility issues, a single level building or a ground floor apartment will greatly increase your chances of staying independent.
After this, you can try to find outside help for the tasks which are difficult for you. If you live a long way from the bus route or if carrying weight is a problem, you may be able to find volunteers at senior community centers and charitable organizations who can bring your groceries in from the local store. Volunteers can also take on some of the tasks of maintaining the property, anything except that which needs a qualified operative such as plumbing and electrical work. The help which is available can postpone or even eliminate the time when residential care is necessary.
The options available for senior citizens living quarters are probably greater than you think, but you need to know about them. The programs which are run by the government are easily discovered through the HUD portal and other pages, but anything which operates locally can be harder to find. This is especially true of volunteer organizations, who often do an exceptional job but who spend all of their time working with seniors and none of it making themselves easy to find online. Asking at church groups or a local community center can help you find more options for senior citizens living.
